This drill teaches first touch and passing accuracy while building movement. Kids learn to receive, turn, and pass in one motion.
Equipment needed: Four cones, 4-8 kids in groups of four, 2-3 soccer balls per group.
Setup: Mark a 10-by-10-yard square with cones. Four kids stand at each cone, one ball to start.
How to run it:
- Kid at cone 1 passes to Kid at cone 2.
- Kid at cone 2 receives, turns, and passes to Kid at cone 3.
- Kid at cone 3 receives, turns, and passes to Kid at cone 4.
- Kid at cone 4 receives, turns, and passes back to cone 1.
- After each pass, the passer follows the pass and takes the next kid’s spot (rotates clockwise).
- Do this for five minutes continuous, building rhythm.
What to look for: Reception and touch. Good first touch is the whole game. A bad first touch forces a bad pass. Watch the receiving foot; if it stays planted, the ball bounces off. The good ones cushion the ball with the inside of the foot and direct it to their next pass with the same touch.
Variation: Reverse the rotation halfway through so they pass and follow the opposite direction. Or add a second ball to the square for the last 90 seconds and watch them adjust.
If they’re struggling: Shrink the square to 8 by 8 yards and let them take two touches: one to receive, one to pass.
If they’ve got it: Add a one-touch rule. They receive and pass in the same motion, no settling. Or stretch the square to 15 by 15 yards so the pass has to travel.
