Finishing is a skill that improves with volume. This drill gives a shooter 20 shots from game-realistic positions so they build feel and confidence.
Equipment needed: One goal, 30 soccer balls in a bucket, 6 kids (4 shooters in rotation, 1 feeder, 1 keeper).
Setup: One goal, a keeper, and a feeder 20 yards out. Shooters stand in rotation, ready to receive.
How to run it:
- Feeder passes to the first shooter from 20 yards out.
- Shooter takes one touch and shoots.
- Keeper distributes or feeder retrieves and resets.
- Next shooter receives from a different angle.
- Do 5 shots per shooter per round, rotating angles: right side, left side, center, far post, near post.
What to look for: Shot placement and finish confidence. Good finishers choose a corner early and shoot with purpose, not strength. The ones who try to blast every ball miss the frame; the ones who pick a side-netting spot and place the ball score more often. Watch the plant foot too. If it points at the keeper, the shot goes at the keeper.
If they’re struggling: Drop the touch requirement and let them set the ball before shooting. Move the feed to 12 yards out so the angle is shorter.
If they’ve got it: Add a defender closing from 8 yards behind. The shooter has one touch and then a shot, with pressure arriving at impact. Track the goals; the bar is 12 of 20.
